Claude Debussy combined three essential colours of classical musical instruments in one of his last works: the bright wind sound of a flute, a darker string sound of the viola, whose strings can also be plucked, and the exclusively plucked strings of the harp. The combination was so fascinating that it also found imitators, among them André Jolivet. Paul Signac likewise knew how to combine light, rhythm, the materiality of the application of paint, and colour combinations. In our musical dialogue with painting, however, the duo of flute and harp, viola and flute, or even a single viola can also create fascinating interactions.
A note: the work by Debussy referred to is the Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp (1915), one of his late sonatas. If you'd like, I can also adjust the tone — for instance, to make it read more like polished concert-programme or exhibition text rather than a literal translation.
The KlangFarben series thrives on the moment: musicians of the Kammerakademie Potsdam engage in a dialogue with the paintings of the exhibition. Music author and presenter Clemens Goldberg and museum director Ortrud Westheider bring art and music together and talk about the stories behind the works – an experiment.

Since its opening in 2017, the house has showcased the significant Impressionist painting collection of its founder Hasso Plattner alongside high-profile temporary exhibitions spanning all styles and periods of art.
